Extractives in Cellulose Processes

Extractives, also known as resinous substances, are a group of chemical compounds that naturally occur in trees. Their main function is to protect trees against pests, diseases, and other external stresses. Despite their natural defense mechanisms, extractives can pose challenges in the processes within the cellulose industry.

Extractives in Processes

During the manufacturing process, extractives from the wood can dissolve and become part of the chemical mixture. These substances can cause various issues, such as the formation of sticky accumulations or deposits on equipment and machinery. These deposits can be difficult to remove and can lead to operational disruptions, production downtime, and decreased efficiency.

To effectively manage and eliminate these problems, it is necessary to first identify the specific extractives responsible for the issues. By analyzing and characterizing these substances, strategies and methods can be developed to prevent and eliminate their negative effects.

RISE has the expertise and technical capacity required to perform detailed analyses of extractives in wood and identify their composition and properties. By utilizing advanced analytical methods and instrumentation, we can help address issues related to extractives in the cellulose industry and contribute to improving process efficiency and sustainability.

We have several gas chromatographs, one of which is for analyzes of extractants according to the GC Åbo method. GC-Åbo is an established way of analyzing excipients such as fatty and hard acids, sterols including. betulinol, steryl esters and triglycerides.

We have a gas chromatograph with test exchanger and two simultaneous detectors. A detector is of all-round type, FID and is mainly used for analysis of carbon compounds. The other is a sulfur-specific detector, FPD which is good when the forest industry has sulfur compounds in many streams.

Methods

RISE has invested in advanced technology to enhance our analytical capabilities, which includes the use of gas chromatography (GC) for analyzing liquid samples. This technology has revolutionized our ability to handle a tight sector of analyses while also opening up the possibility of performing more analyses with high precision and efficiency.

Within our laboratory, several gas chromatographs are available, with one specifically dedicated to analyzing extractives using the GC Åbo method. The GC Åbo method is well-known and established for analyzing extractives such as fatty acids, resin acids, sterols including betulinol, steryl esters, and triglycerides. By employing this method, we can accurately and reliably characterize the composition of extractives in various samples, which is of great importance to the cellulose and paper industry.

In addition to extractive analysis, our gas chromatographs can be used to analyze carbon compounds and sulfur compounds. This is particularly important as the forest industry often has sulfur compounds present in many of its process streams. By being able to identify and quantify these compounds, we can contribute to monitoring and controlling environmental impact and ensuring that industrial facilities operate in accordance with environmental regulations and standards.

Delivery

RISE offers a report that includes data in Excel format and relevant images and diagrams. It is carefully compiled using standard methods for the conducted analyses. The report also includes an assessment of measurement uncertainty to ensure the reliability of the presented results. All relevant parameters significant to the specific analysis are included to provide a comprehensive picture of the situation. Additionally, detailed comments and explanations are provided to offer further insight and understanding of the presented data.

Mill sampling and Fibre Line Investigation

RISE offers on-site sampling services directly at factories and boasts extensive experience in process issues and sample handling. We understand the importance of ensuring that samples are taken in a correct and representative manner to provide reliable results. Our expertise spans across various industries, and we can tailor our sampling methods to fit specific needs and processes.

Regarding fiber line investigations, RISE can conduct detailed analyses focusing on various parameters, including extractives. These inspections can contribute to a deeper understanding of fiber material composition and properties, which is crucial for optimizing the production process and achieving desired levels of quality and efficiency.

RISE maintains a strict confidentiality policy regarding all our client assignments. This means that we treat all information accessed during our work with utmost confidentiality and respect for our clients' privacy and business relationships.
