The standard is used to assess the flammability of bed products, mattresses, bed mattresses, air mattresses etc. by using a smouldering cigarette and a small gas flame as ignition sources.
These methods only evaluate the flammability properties. In order to evaluate how a bed / mattress contributes to a developed fire, the end-use furniture must be tested in full scale with more powerful ignition sources.
From a patient safety, and work environment point of view, it is necessary to set fire resistance requirements for nursing beds.
This standard is divided in two risk classes (high risk and normal risk) depending on where the nursing bed is to be used.
Products are to be tested according to test method EN 597-1, EN 597-2, EN ISO 12952-1 or EN ISO 12952-2. Products consisting of more than one component shall be tested as a complete product.
After testing, a test report in Swedish or English is delivered with the results.
