Logistics for Carbon Capture and Storage in the cement industry

The cement industry in Sweden is facing a significant climate transition. A central aspect of this transition is carbon capture and storage (CCS), which is ambitiously set to be implemented in Sweden by 2030. In order to realize CCS, a reliable, cost effective, and environmentally sustainable CO2-logistics system is required.

RISE and project partner Heidelberg Materials are joining forces in CCS-project Logistics for Carbon Capture and Storage in the cement industry (LoCCS).

The project aims to increase understanding of how a cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally sustainable CO2-logistics system for CCS can be designed for the cement industry in Sweden. The project increases knowledge and understanding of possible CO2-logistics systems for CCS within the cement industry, where the emitter is part of a larger innovation system for CCS. The project analyzes current knowledge of CO2-logistics for CCS, conducts stakeholder analysis in the innovation system, evaluates logistics scenarios from the perspective of the cement industry, and explores business models for CO2 logistics within the Swedish cement industry.

The project is funded by the EU and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth through the national program for the "Fonden för en rättvis omställning" and runs from April 2023 to the end of March 2026
