Contact FriederikeBlue mussels are a nutritious and low-impact source of food, independent of global supply chains of feed and advanced technology. The mussel puzzle project will address knowledge gaps regarding how farming techniques, strategies and location affects the environmental impact of upscaled production.
Interest is growing to significantly increase the use of mussels as food or food ingredient. Considering the global expansion potential, surprisingly little is known about the importance of specific farming techniques, strategies and location chosen for environmental impact. In the mussel puzzle project, it will be assessed how increased production is possible while minimizing the environmental footprint.
Three years of production data will be collected from key producers in the North Atlantic, to demonstrate reduction opportunities for each region and technology. In addition, the expansion potential in these regions will be modelled, together with environmental effects of a more large-scale production, to identify potential environmental trade-offs and ways to minimize these. In this way, the project intends to facilitate a large-scale shift, from food with larger environmental footprint and lower nutritional content, to mussels.
