Contact PeterA brass component intended for use in contact with water, e.g. a component of a water piping system, must be made of a dezincification resistant alloy for retained strength. Dezincification causes embrittlement of the brass material, which in turn can give rise to cracks and eventually breakage of the component, sometimes resulting in extensive and
Test of dezincification resistance for copper alloys with zinc (e.g. brass) according to ISO 6509-1 is performed on materials that will be exposed to fresh, saline waters or drinking water. The method is intended for copper alloys with a mass fraction of zinc that exceeds 15 %.
RISE is accredited by SWEDAC for determination of dezincification resistance according to ISO 6509-1.
Determination of dezincification resistance according to ISO 6509-1 is performed by preparing cross-sections of the component to be tested. The polished cross sections are exposed to a copper chloride solution at 75°C for 24 hours.
After exposure, new cross sections are prepared, perpendicular to the exposed cross sections, and the dezincification depth is evaluated and measured using an optical microscope.
For example, assessment can be made based on the approval criteria found in NKB (Nordic Committee for Building Regulations) Product rules. No approval criteria are specified in standard ISO 6509-1.
Results will be delivered as a report.
