Testing of membranes for fuel cells

The lifespan of fuel cells today is often determined by the lifespan of the membranes. We can help evaluate and compare the lifetime of different membrane materials in fuel cells.

Purpose

We can help evaluate and compare the life of membranes in fuel cells. The membranes are made of polymeric materials and are therefore affected by, among other things, of moisture content and temperature in combination with mechanical loads that occur in the fuel cell during operation. The membranes are thin, therefore equipment with high resolution and precision is needed.

Method

The method we use is DMA-based, Dynamical Mechanical Analyze. The membranes are exposed to both temperature, moisture and mechanical load, this gives a quick response to differences in the properties of different membranes. Doing this in a fuel cell would be significantly more time consuming.
