Bio-based materials
Research on bio-based materials and their production processes needs to be developed to contribute to a future sustainable society. The use of synchrotron light and neutron beams allows advanced material characterization, which means that complex processes can be followed in real time. A tailor-made combination of experimental techniques makes it possible to solve research questions about biocomposites, nanocellulose, wood dissolution, the pulping process, fiber structure and fiber bonding, among others.
Industrial production
In many cases, the equipment commonly used to investigate materials in industry has a limited ability to analyse and characterize the rapid processes that occur in manufacturing. The gap can be filled by neutron and photon-based techniques at large-scale research infrastructures.
Food and agriculture
X-rays and neutron scattering offer completely new opportunities to study food than ever before. The new large-scale research infrastructures that are emerging in Sweden in the form of the MAX IV and ESS facilities offer unique methods and tools for the food industry's research and innovation work.
