On 1 August 2025, a new EU requirement to increase the cybersecurity of wireless products will come into force.
The aim of the new regulations in the form of the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU (RED) Article 3.3.d,e,f, is to ensure that wireless products that we use daily are robust and can withstand increasing cyber threats in society. In concrete terms, the CE marking according to RED will be extended with a supplement that certifies that the manufacturer fulfils the EU's cybersecurity requirements.
The new rules will affect all manufacturers of wireless products for the European market who have to fulfil the technical requirements to sell their products. Affected products are those that use wireless communications such as WiFi. Ultimately, the new rules aim to minimise the risk of disruption to networks, for example through intrusions or DoS attacks, protect users' privacy and personal data, and provide protection against fraud.
RISE is an accredited certification body for the regulations, but also participates in the standardisation group SIS/TK 318/AG 61, which is chaired by Ted Strandberg. He explains:
- The regulations are already implemented at a horizontal level, but there is a possibility to influence the standards until 6 November.
The Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS) has opened the opportunity to comment on the standards until 6 November on its website. The regulatory framework, with the adopted standards, will come into force on 1 August 2025.
