Power tank used in research project on cyber security in the electricity grid

Electric cars, solar cell systems, air conditioners and heat pumps are some examples of facilities that could be used in cyber attacks to knock out the electricity grid. Now, the Krafftank's system will be used for research purposes to contribute to increased knowledge and safer and more robust electric power systems. The Swedish Energy Agency has awarded RISE and Samarkand2015 a grant for a three-year project in which High Voltage Valley's expertise will collaborate.
Energy dependency is increasing and new energy sources such as wind and solar energy do not provide as predictable electricity production as previous solutions, requiring more flexible solutions. Connected user control is also increasing. All this creates cyber risks. The threat from cyber risks has become more apparent as the geo-political situation has deteriorated dramatically. Risk preparedness has previously focused more on electricity generation and distribution networks. Electricity users have not received the same attention, while flexible new solutions tend to be implemented close to electricity users.
Previous international studies have shown that user-side cyber-attacks can cause disruption to parts of national electricity networks. Energy islands, created for security of supply such as the island operation in the Krafttank, can be seen as a miniature of the entire electricity network and are thus well suited to study the consequences of cyber threats.
The Swedish Energy Agency has now awarded grants to RISE and Samarkand2015, for the implementation of the project "COLA; Cyber risks caused by a flexible electricity market and what to do about them: Case study of island operation" during the period 1 November 2023 - 31 October 2026."
The purpose of the project is to contribute to a more robust electric power system that is more secure for the citizen and less vulnerable for the electricity supply. The overall goal is an increased knowledge and understanding among electricity network owners, the energy industry, municipalities, companies and private individuals for weaknesses and risks associated with connected, distributed consumption and production units. We also want to contribute to the academic knowledge base in the field.
