Mikael Ströms research focus is product development methodology. Innovation and product development means to innovate and learn about future users and products. Central is the user's perceived value of the product. Creating the value usually means creating and exploring a solution space and ranking solution alternatives. Less suitable solutions are eliminated, and the remaining ones are developed to meet market requirements, for example sustainable solutions, and at the same time be technically feasible in function and production. In one of the latest projects, interactive optimization methods have been tested for both quantitative and qualitative optimization goals in product development projects. In another project, the Swedish start-up culture has been investigated and an education for the industrialization of new products has been developed. Mikael has introduced visual control methods in product development based on RISE project room concepts. Another method is a one-day workshop in set-based design where creative and systematic methods are applied to generate, evaluate, and reduce a solution space based on a practical product development problem. Inspiration and theory are taken from lean product development, agile product development and systematic product development.
