Contact MikaelRISE has developed a methodology where we in a one-day workshop combine creative and systematic methods to generate a solution space with several alternative solutions to a product development problem. The method, in its whole, is called Set-Based Design. Our workshop is called Instant Set-Based Design (ISBD)
To introduce Set-Based Design (multi-solution technology) to handle a larger solution space and minimize risk in product development. The approach also reduces the number of unwanted loop-backs in product development projects.
ISBD is excellent for product development groups of between 5 - 10 people. In a workshop, participants are stimulated to generate new ideas for solutions that match an existing need of the company's customers. The stimulation takes place by using different creative and systematic methods. The solutions are shared between the participants and combined to provide additional alternatives. By discussing opportunities and challenges with different solutions, the participants learn from each other and enrich each other's knowledge and insights about the solutions' value-creating ability. During the workshop, we use visual tools, solutions are visualized and put up on the walls for mutual inspiration.
For one day, we apply the methodology to a limited product development problem that you take from your ongoing business. The participants work to find new solutions for a component or a subsystem. We introduce various creative and systematic methods for generating and evaluating solutions. Participants learn the methods by testing them in their work environment. The workshop is prepared by the participants looking through the presentation to be used during the day. Work shop leaders from RISE study the product development problem that is to be treated with associated functional requirements and limitations.
After the workshop, all the ideas that came up are collected including the results of the evaluation of the ideas. The idea is to move into a complete Set-Based design process.
An important aspect of the ISBD method is that it works with concrete innovation challenges and creates solutions that meet customers' needs. The idea is to create value from the beginning. The process also means that the company learns the method and its parts. By applying the method we train the company's employees in using all or parts of the method on their own. Also from this aspect, value is created from the beginning.
