FunCoat – Functional Coatings for more energy efficient heat pumps

The aim is to decrease the problems with frost by developing functional coatings on the heat exchanger surfaces, which would lead to large energy savings due to a reduced need of defrosting.

Challenge

Build-up of frost on heat exchanger surfaces in airbourne heat pumps is a problem in cold climate. It results in downtime in operation and requires defrosting, which costs large amounts of energy.

Solution

RISE has in previous research projects shown that certain types of coatings on heat exchanger surfaces have a positive effect in terms of slower build-up of frost and faster defrosting. In this project we continue this work, with the aim of improving both the function and durability of the coating.

Effect

Airbourne heat pumps with higher efficiency would in the long run make such products more attractive as housewarming options, which would contribute to a more sustainable energy system.
