In principle, nucleic acid never appears freely in a sample but must be extracted from cells or tissues. Upon extraction, the cells must first be lysed which releases not only the nucleic acid but also nucleases and other cellular components that should be eliminated or inactivated not to interfere with subsequent analysis.
The extraction method you choose depends on a number of different factors. The ideal extraction method provides a good yield of high purity intact nucleic acid, from all microorganisms and sample types.
