Getting started with AI at work
02 September 2024, 16:52
Hello there Carl Heath, you and your RISE colleague Micke Kring will soon be launching the course “Getting started with AI at work”.
Why is it so important?
- AI is no longer a thing of the future - it's a reality that is changing the way we work. This course is important because it gives public sector professionals the tools and knowledge they need to navigate and benefit from the technological revolution. It's about futureproofing our public sector.
What can AI contribute?
- AI can transform how we deliver public services. It can automate time-consuming processes, generate in-depth analysis, and help us make more informed decisions. But perhaps most importantly, AI can free up time for human creativity and problem-solving, ultimately leading to better services for citizens.
The threshold can be high to start that journey, how should you think?
- The important thing is to start, no matter where you are today. Our course is designed to meet participants at their level. We focus on practical application and experience sharing, making learning more accessible and relevant. Remember, all experts started as beginners once!
What are the risks of NOT getting started with AI at work?
- Not engaging with AI means running the risk of not taking advantage of the opportunities available, while leaving yourself vulnerable to the risks that AI brings. In the worst case, it could lead to us not being able to deliver the services and solutions that society expects from us.
Are there any professions where it is particularly relevant?
- AI has the potential to impact all professions, but some may see more immediate impact. Teachers can use AI for personalized learning, healthcare professionals for diagnostic support, and administrators for more efficient case management. But whatever the profession, I believe that understanding AI will become a fundamental skill for everyone in the future.
Are there any barriers to getting started with AI at work?
- Absolutely, security and privacy are key issues, especially when it comes to sensitive data. Other barriers can include lack of skills, concerns about job safety, and challenges around ethics and liability. But these barriers are not insurmountable - rather, they are important aspects to address in our AI journey.
How to get around these obstacles?
- The key is knowledge and strategy. We need to train our staff, develop robust security, and create clear ethical guidelines for AI use. In our course, we address these issues and give participants the tools to deal with them. It's about building a culture of responsible AI use.”
Why does Sweden as a nation need to accelerate when it comes to AI development?
- Sweden has always been a country of innovation, and to maintain that position we need to be at the forefront of AI. It's about our competitiveness, our welfare, and our ability to solve societal challenges.
What does RISE contribute to strengthening AI development nationally?
- At RISE, we work on several fronts. We run research projects, collaborate with industry and the public sector, and offer training courses like this one. Our goal is to build a bridge between cutting-edge research and practical application, and to support organizations in their AI journey. We want to be the catalyst that drives Sweden's AI development forward.
What does individual development mean in this larger context?
- Individual development is the foundation of our collective success. Every person who learns about AI, who experiments with new tools, who challenges their thinking - they become ambassadors for change in their organizations. It is by raising the skill level of individuals that we can create the critical mass needed to drive digital transformation.
