Simplified Charging for Electric Cars from April 13th

28 February 2024, 12:59

In all public charging stations installed from April 13th, it will be much easier to charge your car. A new regulation means users no longer need to register but can easily pay with a regular payment card.

The decision was made by the Council of the European Union with the adoption of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). This step aims to enhance user-friendliness and promote vehicle electrification. RISE is Sweden’s research institute and an independent neutral actor, which now takes broad responsibility for consumer protection and personal safety regarding the charging infrastructure in the country.

With the hope of making electric vehicle (EV) charging as convenient as refuelling traditional fuels, this step is expected to further facilitate vehicle owners to embrace more sustainable and environmentally friendly vehicle usage.

The regulation entails an increase in ambition and will regulate how the expansion of the charging infrastructure will be implemented throughout the entire EU. Requirements for one-time charging without registration at all newly installed charging stations are one of the aspects regulated in AFIR. As of January 1, 2027, the retroactive requirement for payment with payment cards applies exclusively to fast chargers (regardless of when they were installed) from 50 kW and above.
