Renewable and fossil-free fuels for a sustainable future
The transport sector accounts for one-fifth of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. By 2045, Sweden aims to be one of the world's first fossil-free welfare countries and to have a fossil-independent vehicle fleet by 2030. The reduction obligation is a policy tool used to achieve this goal with a stepwise increase of renewable components in petrol and diesel. In addition, the EU has targets for an increased share of renewables in road transport but at lower levels than in Sweden. In recent years, new incentives for sustainable aviation fuels have been proposed or decided, and in the long term there will be a high demand for liquid biofuels in aviation and the marine sector, while extensive electrification is expected for land transport.
RISE focuses on development related to renewable fuels for all these transport sectors, including a unique research infrastructure for various biomass conversion processes. The emphasis is on the development of processes and systems for renewable fuels and green chemicals from residues and by-products originating in agriculture and the forest industry. Resource-efficient use of the limited biomass resource is a key issue for future-proof conversion processes. There is also an emerging interest in society for biogenic carbon dioxide as a raw material for fuels and materials. Here too, RISE has both research activities and research infrastructure that can contribute to the development and commercialization of these technologies.
