Integrating social values in decisions about school location

The project investigates how municipal processes for school siting can contribute to improved accessibility and social integration in schools and the wider society. The purpose is achieved through:

Development of a value calculation method.Evaluation of strategies for school infrastructure.Testing of the value calculation method on planning tools.

The introduction of Sweden's school choice reform and contemporary urban planning ideals prompts an examination of how state schools can be organized and sited in alignment with urban and community development. This involves achieving objectives related to social integration, equal accessibility, and a shift towards sustainable transportation. By employing a methodology known as Social Return on Investment to evaluate the social impacts of various alternatives, this study sheds light on these concerns and helps minimize uncertainties in municipal decision-making. The ultimate aim is for all school locations to be chosen with an understanding of the potential social costs and benefits that may emerge.

This project is conducted in partnership with two municipalities, which are tasked with testing the value calculation method in their planning processes.
