Zandra Gidlöf now holds the title of doctor
11 December 2024, 13:18
At the end of November 2024, during her doctoral defense, NextBioForm researcher Zandra Gidlöf defended her thesis in Food and Formulation Technology titled "Aqueous Two-phase Systems for Starch Microsphere Formulation and Encapsulation of Live Bacteria - A Phase Behavior Perspective."
Congratulations Zandra, you can now call yourself a doctor!
Can you tell us about your research?
“My research group has focused on the formulation of starch microspheres in water-based two-phase systems. We have investigated how different parameters affect the formation of these microspheres and whether these systems can be used to incorporate live probiotic bacteria into starch-based particles.”
What are the results of your research?
“In conclusion, the results of my research show the importance of studying phase behavior during the development of these systems. The work highlights how methods of mapping water distribution, phase diagrams and crystallization can be used to influence the formation of starch particles. In addition, the research shows that these systems can be used to encapsulate bacteria and that amylase enzyme can act as a release mechanism.”
What are you most proud of in your thesis work?
"It's actually a bit difficult for me to give a concrete answer to that question because there are several things in this project that make me proud. But if I were to single out something in particular, I would say that I am most proud of how we have managed to use relatively simple analytical methods to learn a lot about our systems, and then build on this with more advanced methods that have given us a deeper understanding. I am also proud of how this PhD journey has helped me grow as a researcher, which is largely thanks to all the great people in my research group."
How have you and your project benefited from being part of NextBioForm?
"NextBioForm has provided a network of competences and analyses that would not have been possible without the consortium. I think this kind of platform really demonstrates the benefits of "putting our heads together" and how much more we can achieve when we work together in multidisciplinary teams."
What was the experience of doing a PhD at NextBioForm like?
"It has been incredibly fun and educational. Doing a PhD at NextBioForm gives, in my opinion, a broader perspective on the industry. In addition to the academic world, you also get insight into collaboration with industry and the outside world, which provides excellent opportunities to build contact networks between the different fields."
During your doctoral studies, you have worked closely with companies, what has this led to?
"Companies have contributed materials and analytical equipment to my project, which has been very valuable. In addition, I have received support through the companies in NextBioForm in the form of supervision and mentoring, which has been incredibly valuable both for my project and for my development as a researcher."
