New Nordic research network for wild berries
12 March 2024, 11:39
In connection with the Nordic forest berry conference in Umeå in autumn 2023, a new Nordic forest berry research network was established.
Through funding from Nordic Forest Research (SNS) and the Forest Bioeconomy Network, the network will conduct webinars and workshops with the aim of establishing a research forum for the exchange of knowledge on issues such as cultural and commercial aspects of the use of forest berries, current legal requirements and policies, requirements and wishes for quality and sensory parameters and health effects of forest berries. The network includes researchers from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark.
In 2024, the Nordic research network will compile and communicate country-specific state-of-the-art reports in the forest berry area, identify future research needs, find synergies in the research area and plan for the 2025 Nordic forest berry conference organised in Rovaniemi. The long-term ambition is to show the forest as a resource for multiple values, not only in the form of biomass from trees. Among other things, forest berries have an important role to play in forest biodiversity, climate adaptation and the development of new local business models and nature tourism.
