Tools for transition in the food system

04 March 2024, 19:38

Soon, FINEST will be publishing the first version of a toolbox for navigating sustainability transition. Navigating the Future: Dialogue Tools for Sustainability Transition provides an introductory understanding of sustainability transition – and the importance of innovation and collaboration for the future societal systems.

The purpose is to explain sustainability transition and innovation in a simplified manner, emphasizing the creation of value for one's own operations and for others, in line with a desired future. Through a systemic perspective on innovation, we learn to navigate beyond product and process optimization and focus on how resource flows and behaviors contribute to ecological, social, and economic societal transition.

The dialogue tools are designed to foster learning and consensus among different actors and to promote the development of shared visions and future scenarios. These tools are based on research from areas such as collaboration, innovation, transition, or scenario planning and are useful in processes aimed at transforming whole or parts of a societal system. The goal is for these tools to be practical and useful for addressing the challenges that often arise during the transition of a societal system.

Dialogue on collaboration and transition helps actors strategically address sustainability challenges and can:

  • Strengthen actors in shared challenges by increasing the opportunity to come together to help each other.
  • Provide the chance to refine current business strategies through insight into what can elevate the business, operations, and brand in the future.
  • Demonstrate opportunities for risk and cost sharing.
  • Transfer knowledge ahead of upcoming requirements for sustainability reporting.
  • Create insights into one's own and others' levels of ambition in relation to common challenges.
  • Build deeper collaboration in value chains and networks.
  • Increase consensus and collective intelligence around sustainability challenges.

In Finest's dialogues, we also capture the needs of actors for policy development that can support authorities in their work with enabling measures.
