Edge. What is the big deal?

Tor Björn Minde was invited to Data Center Forum in Helsinki 2021. He presented the work RISE is doing on network edge in 5G. See below a video from the session.
5G is currently rolled out all over the globe with new features for IoT, security and network slicing that will enable new and improved use cases. The greatest change though is the decrease in latency that is exponential in impact. The vision for 6G is a 10-fold improvement in performance.
The new use cases and device types will create more data traffic and need for compute infrastructure close to the end use. This network edge infrastructure will enable completely new applications and further impact the large-scale central IT infrastructure. The network edge nodes will be of different sizes, designs and they need to be autonomous.
