Energy Performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) as Micro-Combined Heat and Power Source

In a master thesis project by David E. Avilés-Rojas from Universitat Rovira i Virgili the energy performance of SOFC as combined heat and power source was analysed.

The Master's Thesis was part of a European project called WEDISTRICT. The project aims to provide renewable energy source solutions to District Heating systems. It is also part of the funded EU programme Horizon 2020- Social Challenges, which intends to achieve aclean, efficient, reliable energy transition.

Specifically, this Thesis is involved in the WEDISTRICT Demonstrator in Luleå, Sweden, and a thermal study of the Energy Performance of single Oxide Fuel Cells as a Micro-Combined Heat and Power Source was conducted. The goal of this Master's Thesis was to execute an experimental characterization of a single Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and analyze the thermal and electrical performance. As a result, the results and correlations obtained can be modelled and integrated into the Demonstrator system.

The thesis consisted of three stages. Firstly, the experimental characterization of a single fuel cell. Including the design, installation, and testing. An experiment at partial load is performed, increasing the load from 500W to 1500W. Also, in an experiment studying the influence of the water flow rate on the thermal performance. 2 L/min and 3L/min of water flow are analyzed. The results showed a 60% electrical efficiency, 100W of heat power, and peaktemperatures of 88ºC; at conditions of 1500W of power production and 2L/min of water flow rate. Furthermore, a model of the experimental setup of a single Solid Oxide Fuel Cell is created using TRNSYS. Finally, the model was integrated into the nine Fuel Cells envelope to determine its behaviour and performance under specific scenarios.
