Rack density increases. Lets re-think! We need a clean-slate design!

The 9th annual edition of Datacenter Forum Copenhagen took place on 26 September 2024. The event was attended by over 300 leaders, key decision makers, and professionals from the data center sector in Denmark.Tor Björn Minde was there presenting about the future of high density compute for AI. He also participated in the panel Datacenter Changemakers "Navigating the AI Revolution".
The panel adressed that the explosion in AI demand has significant implications for the data center industry and IT management. From ever-increasing energy needs, to innovative cooling requirements, AI applications and high-performing computing are fundamentally transforming data centers across the Nordics.
The conclusions from the presentation on high-density compute were:
• The future is fulllof demanding applications using generative AI models
• The new microprocessors will have heat fluxes like nuclear reactors
• Thermal management of these heat fluxes requires liquid cooling
• A projection based on the announced microprocessor development points at 500 kW/rack - 1 MW/rack
• We need to rethink and a clean slate design
• RISE is on the case!
