The AI of the future does not run on air

The rapid development of generative AI means a paradigm shift for many sectors of society. At the same time, the infrastructure that constitutes a prerequisite for the new generation of AI to function needs to be developed. In order to achieve successful digitization, it is crucial that data centers, which form the basis of the digital world, develop in a sustainable manner, not least in terms of energy use. Ground-breaking research into the future of microprocessor cooling is therefore ongoing at the RISE ICE Datacenter.
Liquid cooling of data centers is a strong global trend. For example, Meta has announced that all the company's data center facilities will be cooled with liquid in 2030, which means that liquid cooling will eventually replace air cooling. This, in turn, can lead to a transformation in the market.
The energy use associated with generative AI and large language models is significant. Generative AI simply requires a lot of electrical power, which places new demands on, among other things, the cooling of microprocessors in data centers. Now that we see a marked increase in the use of generative AI, it is increasingly important to understand and manage their environmental and energy-related consequences.
