Strengthens Sweden's global competitiveness within 5G applications

Together with Telia, RISE has created a unique test bed for Edge experiments in 5G networks. The test bed that RISE has built is unique in Europe, which gives Swedish industry and ICT companies unique competitive advantages and an opportunity for an important lead over the competitors. Dedicated Northstar 5G networks from Ericsson with key technologies are now being established at four strategic locations in Sweden.
With the help of EU funding, RISE and Telia are building advanced 5G networks for pioneering large-scale projects for digital innovation in important areas of society such as transport and logistics and agriculture. Together with the Ultuna agricultural test bed, Luleå Harbour, Boden Industrial Park, Skellefteå Smart City and via EU funding of 4.5 million euros, a powerful uniform 5G edge infrastructure is being established which can, among other things, contribute to safer ports, autonomous agriculture and managing traffic in cities via, among other things, connected and self-driving vehicles, drones and agricultural robots. The testbed environment is vendor neutral and uses open source, giving developers the freedom to innovate without being locked into a vendor.
Edge is a key technology for future digital innovation. The technology can be explained as a local cloud that is placed far out at the edge of the network. Edge in combination with 5G provides an exponential reduction in the delay in the network, which opens up new development opportunities and new innovative power.
